My Georgia O'Keefe-Themed Bachelorette Was Deliciously Low-Key
Wild (sort-of) western (definitely).
To all of my loyal friends and readers, thanks for your patience the last few weeks (and the few to come!). With my wedding closing in, I’m being slowly tugged in multitudinous directions, and despite my best efforts this happy little place tends to get last fiddle. I’ll be a bit inconsistent, but hopefully you’ll stick it out with me until we’re on the other side, when I promise to have things back up and running in a more timely way.
Now, onto the fun stuff.
I just got back last week from my bachelorette in Taos, New Mexico. It was four full days of lush, wholesome, restorative girl time. I’m not having bridesmaids at my wedding, but I still wanted an excuse to gather up my friends for a get-together that while yes, was centered on me, was really more about everyone having a giggly, relaxing time.
The vision for the week was not exactly traditional, as I told Vogue, no sash, no tiara, no phallic shot glasses. My bachelorette probably would have looked quite different if I’d planned it a decade ago, but at 35, I wanted something that allowed me to really soak up the time with my friends — who flew from all over the country — and actually enjoy each other’s company. As a capricorn, an outdoorsy gal, a fashion lover, and a bit of an introvert, I knew I wanted a bachelorette that felt like me, that captured my specific, odd, silly interests and wasn’t just a box to check on the road to the big event.
I planned themed dinners: florals inspired by Georgia O’Keefe, and a western night. But, I also wrote out a packing guide that included hiking gear and comfy lounge sets for our down time. Girls really can do it all! Despite our relatively low-key itinerary, I wanted to embrace pre-bridal fashion on my own terms. Not through a bedazzled “Wife” bikini, but through outfits that felt like an extension of who I was everyday, lifted to a new level. Paillettes, beads, bared abs!
Four days doesn’t seem like much, but I came back home glowy and buzzed on the care and love I felt from the trip. Below, find a little rundown of the long weekend.
Day 1: Arrivals and Girl Dinner
Wearing: Alex Mill Chiltern Jacket ($325), Levis 501 Jeans ($210), Buck Mason Tank ($48) Nike x Jacquemus Moon Sneakers (similar, $115), Yardsale Day Bag ($174)
We woke up bright and early Wednesday morning to hop on the plane and make our way to Santa Fe, and eventually Taos. While I’m often a sweats girl on red-eyes, for daytime flights, I’m more aligned with a perfectly baggy pair of Vintage Levis and a comfy sweater, the type of duo you can wear anywhere post-flight and still look put-together-ish, even when you’re exhausted.

We stopped for post-flight coffee and brunch at Modern General Feed & Seed in Santa Fe before making the 1.5 hour drive out to Taos, cutting through deep river canyons and desert plains. Our Airbnb, Many Feathers Ranch, was a discovery by my friend Nicole, and owned by the fashion designer Raquel Allegra. It was tucked down a long dirt road, surrounded by trees and complete with an icy creek out back. Inside, we were spoiled with an insane curation of vintage furniture to perch on, and I came home with an itch to re-do my entire apartment. (Read more about the stay in my Vogue story!)
Day 1: Linen Matching Sets
Wearing: With Nothing Underneath The Weekend Top ($250) and Shorts ($150).
Exhausted from our travel day, we rustled up a chill girl dinner at the house, sharing glasses of rose, chips, cheese, and fruits — a decadent spread, served in customized Lazy Jamie cups I had engraved with the phrase “girl dinner” (how apropos) as a gift for all of my friends. I also gifted the group matching linen sets with custom embroidery from With Nothing Underneath for hanging around the house. They became the week’s uniform, and we jokingly referred to ourselves as a bachelorette cult whenever we inevitably all came out in coordinated looks.
Day 2: Hiking In the Mountains
Wearing: Literary Sport Sweatshirt ($240), Nike running shorts, Nike ACG Sneakers ($260), Baggu Crescent Bag ($56)
Thursday was our first full day in Taos. In the morning, a part of our crew huffed and puffed up the Gavilan trail, in the nearby mountains. Taos is at 6969 ft. elevation, with the cheesy tees to remind you of it, so up the mountain a bit was crossing 10,000 feet of elevation — no joke for those of us who live at sea level. As an avid hiker I had my heart set on getting some trail time in on our trip, and though it was just 25 minutes from our Airbnb, the landscape was completely transformed.

Once we reunited with the rest of the group, we headed into Taos proper for lunch at Orlandos along with shopping at spots like The Arc (we were eying vintage Jil Sander and antique nightdresses) and Everywhere (featuring Elena Stonaker sculptures and chic home goods).
Day 2: Florals Night For Dinner At Medley
Wearing: Prada floral jacquard skirt (similar, $625) and bralette (similar, $520) , Saks Potts Jacket (via TRR, $565) , J.Crew x MNZ Heels (similar, $325).
I love an excuse to dress up, and I also love a theme… so I convinced my friends to dress in florals for the night, inspired by the paintings of Georgia O’Keefe. Yes, it’s a bit of a stretch, Georgia’s personal style was fairly austere (she was also friends with and wore a lot of Claire McCardell dresses). But, I had fun pulling my outfit together (the set was a last minute buy from a Prada sample sale two days before the trip).

I think our efforts were successful, we showed up as the best dressed patrons at Medley on a random Thursday night. Admittedly, I also kept my jacket on for the night, since a bralette was perhaps a little more than the rest of the restaurant’s patrons bargained for, still I don’t regret it!
Day 3: Swim Style for Ojo Caliente Spa
Wearing: Chan Luu Sheer Tunic ($390), Peony swimsuit (similar top $160 and bottom $110), Magic Hat ($100), Birkenstock Arizona Sandal (155).
On Friday, we had a leisurely breakfast before heading out towards our to-do for the day, a visit to Ojo Caliente, a spa and hot springs just over an hour outside of Taos. On the way, we stopped for a quick, sunny hike along the Rio Grande.

It might seem counterintuitive to spend a hot day sitting in pools of even hotter water, but doused in sunscreen and wearing our best sun-protective headgear (like any good 30-something should), we zenned out, hopping from mud pool to mineral pool over the course of a few hours.
Day 2: Dressing Down for Girls’ Night In
Wearing: J.Crew Dress ($165), Scarf ($60), Necklace ($50), and Sunglasses ($50)
When we got home, we had the rest of the evening to hang at the house, cook, and play a series of silly little bachelorette games including a round of “Aemilia Trivia.” I changed into a bandana-inspired minidress from J.Crew and we got to prepping for a spicy night of fajitas and mezcal margs (please enjoy this pic of our grill master Nicole in action).

While I wasn’t one to lean too hard into the bachelorette-y-ness of the whole affair, as an avid trivia attendee, a low-fi game night felt like the perfect way to lean into celebrating without going too extra.
Day 3: Desert Whites for the Georgia O’Keefe Tour at Ghost Ranch
Wearing: Buck Mason Tank ($48), Doen Skirt (similar, $228), Bode Jacket (via Grailed, $801), Tory Burch Romy Bag ($395), Nike x Jacquemus Moon Sneakers (similar, $115)
We woke up extra early and scarfed down french toast before heading to Ghost Ranch, where Georgia O’Keefe lived and painted many of her landscapes during her life. Our fashionable tour guide Susan was initially grumpy about our lack of appropriate hiking footwear, but as a fashionable group of mostly New Yorkers, we can (and did) hike in just about anything.

This probably wasn’t her normal tour crew since we asked her all sorts of silly questions about O’Keefe’s romance and power dynamics with beau Alfred Stieglitz, her fashion choices, and living (like many of us) in New York for a time. Susan was full of bangers, including this saucy anecdote about Georgia: “the more I learn about her, the less I like her as a person.” Turns out, O’Keefe asked her sister Ida to stop painting because she was threatened by her. Oop!
Day 3: Western Looks for Dinner at Love Apple
Wearing: Miu Miu Suede Top (similar, $956), Buck Mason Tank ($48), Doen Skirt (similar, $228), Vintage Beaded Belt ($28), Tecovas Annie Boots ($375), Blis Lau Kaleidoscope Ring ($495), Turquoise Necklace (similar, $375)
Back in April I posted a note from an eBay pop up about finding the perfect pink Miu Miu shirt, and this is where my purchase finally came in handy. Seamlessly adopted as a piece of my western-inspired look. As you can see from our group photo below everyone leaned into my dress code in their own unique way, with everything from full denim-on-denim, to swingy skirts and fringe. When going for western, it’s easy to skew costume-y, so it’s all about adding in little true-to-style details without going full-on Bella Hadid at the rodeo.
Piled into our cars and appropriate singing along to Shania Twain and “Goodbye Earl” We went to The Love Apple for dinner, a classic Taos restaurant and “where all the bachelorettes go” according to one kooky shuttle driver. Spoiler: it was delicious.

Dressed up like extras on a Taylor Sheridan show, we attempted to transform the last night into one western getdown, but admittedly failed. A visit to Taos Inn for live music revealed that the bar closed at 9pm (a shock to this Brooklynite), and a visit to Daleee KTaos, another local venue, was a bit more subdued than we were hoping for. It seems we were destined to soak up the girl time at the house (no complaints!) before we packed up the next morning and said our goodbyes until the big day.

My body and my wedding
Last week, I plugged the words “GLP-1 pills online?” into Google. It was an action I feel a lot of shame in admitting to. But it’s true.
Gearing up for a wild west spring
Do you know that weird feeling when you learn a new word for the first time and suddenly you start to hear/see it everywhere?

Ok this is genius...
You wear western so well, Aemilia. Thanks for including our piece and hope you had the best time celebrating.
